The Crawford W. Long Museum and Jefferson Public Library are partnering once again to bring an outstanding Lunch and Learn opportunity to the community on Thursday, Feb. 2, just in time for Valentine’s Day. The event will be held at the Jefferson Public Library from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. with the program beginning at noon.
Posy Storey Henson, President of the Jefferson Garden Club will be speaking about ”The Message of Flowers” and all attendees will make a Tussie Mussie to take home. Throughout history, lovers have given flowers to each other as a token of their longing, devotion and love. The language and meaning of flowers has evolved through the years. Prior to the 1800’s, pestilence was rampant and indoor plumbing was not. Elegant ladies would often carry small bouquets of fragrant herbs and flowers to fend off noxious odors. Also, known as nosegays, tussie mussies remained popular through the Victorian era.
A traditional Victorian style tussie mussie is arranged with a central flower surrounded by one or two rings of flowers in contrasting colors. The stems are tied with ribbon or held in an ornate silver cone-shaped holder, which is also commonly referred to as a tussie mussie.
This is a free program for the community. Those who attend may bring lunch or pre-order a bag lunch for $5. Call the Museum at 706-367-5307 to order lunch or confirm attendance no later than Tuesday, Jan. 24. Lunch can be pre-paid with a credit card over the phone or stop by the Museum to pay with cash or check. All flowers and supplies will be provided at no charge to those making tussie mussies.
