Boys golf: Clerical error costs Mill Creek state title

EVANS – Milton High left the metro Augusta area as the Class AAAAA state champions in boys’ golf, but Mill Creek was the best team on the course at Champions Retreat Golf Club Monday.

A scoring error cost the Hawks the state title as a clerical error on the scorecard disqualified a team-low 71 from Dylan Pence, forcing Mill Creek to count Brian Kim’s 83. The error bumped the Hawks from first to sixth with a total score of 310, giving Milton (302) a sweep on the day as its girls’ team also took home a state title.

HOSCHTON – Mill Creek fought back in game one and compiled seven hits, but the bats went cold in the second game of the double-header Friday night with Shiloh, as the Hawks split the two games with the Generals in the first round of the 5-A state baseball playoffs.

The deciding Game 3 is Saturday at 4 p.m. and will be hosted by Mill Creek at Fathers Field.

Shane Seckinger and JaMarkus George pitched three-hit ballgames each, but Shiloh and George came away with the win in Game 2 when the Generals scored the game’s lone run in the sixth on an RBI double from Cletis Avery. Despite only three hits, the Hawks managed to get six runners on the base path in the game, but a series of pickoffs and poor base running prevented any runs.

BRASELTON — Skip Barber Racing School held its third annual open house event Friday at Road Atlanta. It was the first time the event was held since the nationally recognized racing school moved its headquarters to Braselton, which prior to the move served as a racing instruction only location.

The open house was free to the public and allowed driving and racing enthusiasts from around the area and the country to experience aspects of racing firsthand at Road Atlanta.

The headquarter move was completed last September, with the Braselton location now holding accounting, marketing, sales and information technology departments along with the company’s logistics, fabrication and maintenance operation at Road Atlanta, which occurred November 2010.

The open house event allowed drivers of all skill levels to get free instruction. Two activities let attendees get behind the wheel and drive under the supervision of school instructors – on a skid pad and on an autocross course.

The decision was made months ago, but with the high school season over and the college commitment celebrations coming to a close, Zach Bost can now focus on the next step – preparing to begin his college career.

Bost gathered with coaches, family and friends Thursday to celebrate his signing and commitment to Appalachian State University for a tennis scholarship.

Bost committed to ASU more than four months ago, but has been keeping busy in the meantime on the United States Tennis Association (USTA) 18 and under circuit and with his senior season of High School, where he was a four-year standout with Jefferson High.

A four-star rated player by TennisRecruiting.net, Bost is looking to continuing his playing career at the next level.

“I plan to practice a lot more and get ready for the team, playing in tournaments and things like that” he said.
