The Southern Soccer Academy hosted one of the most competitive tournaments in the state for youth soccer and the Jefferson 11U recreation league soccer team made their presence felt in more ways than one. They pulled out a big win over SSA/Chelsea Central who is ranked ninety-ninth in the state of Georgia in a 3-2 win after trailing 2-0.
The Dragons tied the ball game at 2 apiece against the fifth-seventh ranked team in the state, SSA/Chelsea North. The drama unfolded in the final two minutes of the match where Jefferson was down 2-1; Alejandro “Chino” DeVillena dished the assist to Brandon Hudson who nailed the shot to tie the game.
“It was really a great tournament with great teams, great players and great coaches; we were very honored to have had the experience to play amongst them all,” said head coach Jason Mott.
Jefferson went on to be runner-up in the tourney. Their performance in the tourney catapulted them from a ninety-seventh to fifty-seventh ranking. In their third match, Jefferson took care of business easily with a 4-0 win over Concord Fire North. The win allowed Jefferson to compete in the championship game against Chelsea Central Premier; however they fell 1-nil to a team with an impressive ranking at twenty-seventh.
“I was very happy with our showing and very aware that a silver medal was a high honor given the size of the clubs and talent that we were up against,” said Mott. We hope to continue to improve, learn, compete and win. Our goal as a team is to make it into the top 30 teams in the state in the next year and our performance in this tournament was confirmation that we are on our way,” said Mott.
