Head Coach Brent Leitsch of the Mill Creek High School girls’ soccer team discusses the key to their offense, their finish in the region last year and the teams they need to get past this season.
Q: Is Lauren Tanner anchoring your offense?
A: She is. She scored two goals on Tuesday. She is definitely the focal point of our offense right now. The key for us is supporting her to the best we can and having some other people step up so that people can take their focus off of Lauren but, when they do they will have to pay the price for our other players.
Q: Was their a tight finish at the end of the season to capture the region title?
A: We were fourth in the region. We played Collins Hill High School in our last region game of the year. If we would have won that game, we would have been region champs. It was a [tight race] and it always is. There are a lot of good coaches and a lot of good players. We didn’t come and play against Collins Hill. They punished us.
Q: If there is one player on your team that you are looking to emerge from the underdog role, who would it be and why?
A: One player that is an underclassmen and someone we are expecting a lot out of is Ellie Bowes. She has taken the role as center midfielder. She is replacing one of our strongest players from last year.
Q: Which team is standing in your way this season?
A: I would say Peachtree Ridge High School. They are the defending champs and will remain that way until someone knocks them off. That is a game we want to win but we also know that teams such as Collins Hill, North Gwinnett and Norcross [High School] have the talent to beat anybody at any time. In this region, we really can’t focus on one team.
