The Hawks of Mill Creek High School entered the Area Duals ranked seventh and jumped straight into the fire against the No. 2 seed, North Gwinnett High School. The two became very familiar with each other in the Gwinnett County Varsity meet where junior Marcos Rosenjker eliminated a Bulldog and went on to take a second place finish.
North Gwinnett had revenge on their mind as the same wrestler handed Rosenjker a loss that was a much needed win for the Hawks. Duluth High School was the host of the Area Duals but they didn’t survive in their own environment as they fell to Mill Creek 48-30 in the second round.
However, things became interesting in a win or go home battle against Habersham Central High School. The Raiders and Hawks were tied at 12 a piece but Mill Creek quickly moved past HCHS for a comfortable lead.
Just when it looked as though the Hawks would fly into the next round, they were forced to forfeit two weight classes; one wrestler failed to make his weight while the other was nursing a growth plate injury to his knee. Mill Creek was forced to surrender 12 points. Tied at 36 all, it took no time at all for the Raiders to edge the Hawks 42-36.
Mill Creek will turn its attention to the state traditional title which is set for Feb. 14-16. Collins Hill, along with North Gwinnett will be two of the teams standing in Mill Creek’s way for an appearance at state. First, the Hawks will need to place in the top four at the state area meet followed by a top eight finish in the sectionals.
