Pastor Jack Lawson holds the Bible just before placing in the hole dug by Deacons and committee members. The pulpit will be placed near where the Bible is buried so His Word will be preached.
A building to glorify God is envisioned for the property at 79 Memorial Drive in Jefferson.
It was on that ground on Sunday afternoon that Pastor Jack Lawson said the plans were to dedicate the building for Him.
“We dedicate it to our God,” said Lawson. “This will be a house where we want to serve God and let the gospel spread out from it. This house belongs to God where people can find help and services they need.”
Lawson, who said he never imagined God would place it upon his heart at the age of 70 to have him be a part of planting a new church in Jackson County, shared scripture from 2 Cornithians.
Lawson said Millard Garland of Garland Construction will be building the 12,000-square-foot, $1.2 million church that will seat 279.
“When the building is built, we will be standing over the word of God,” said Lawson.
At the groundbreaking ceremony, Lawson said he had announced to the congregation earlier in the day that the event would be two-fold. In addition to placing a Bible in the soil unearthed by Deacons and members of the building committee, a copy of the note on the land was burned and placed in the hole as well.
Lawson said the church will enter 2013 free of debt. In less than three years from its founding, the congregation of Jackson County Baptist Church located a parcel of land, acquired the property at half the listed price which he said was nothing short of a miracle and paid off the debt on the land on Dec. 31.
“Our members have sacrificially given,” said Lawson, of those who are part of answering God’s call that there be a new church in Jackson County.
Brother Sam Holman said, “Today is a great beginning.” He said it was a once in a lifetime work to be able to start a church from the ground up.
The church was constituted on July 11, 2010, according to the church’s first-year history compiled by Elaine Ferguson.
“On Sunday afternoon, May 2, 2010 at 3 p.m., a group of 33 like-minded believers plus two children met at the First Georgia Bank, Community Room in Jefferson, for the purpose of a discussion of starting a mission church of the Corinth Baptist Church of Loganville with Dr. Jack Lawson, Pastor.”
More from Elaine Ferguson’s history:
After much discussion & prayer, it was unanimously agreed that we felt a church was needed for the purpose of feeding the believers of Jackson County and winning the lost to Jesus Christ. The name “Jackson County Baptist Church” was suggested by Dr. Jack Lawson and agreed upon to be the name of the church. An offering was received so the work could immediately begin and a committee was named to begin the search of the area for a building where the temporary church services can be held. It was mentioned that several families were unable to attend the meeting today due to previous plans. The meeting was closed in a united prayer circle.

“Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on a hill cannot be hid. Neither do men light a candle,
and put it under a bushel, but on a candlestick; and it giveth light unto all that are in the house. Let
your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is
in heaven.” – Matthew 5: 14 -16

Corinth Baptist Church, 3156 Langley Road, Loganville, GA – Don Richards, Pastor
July 11, 2010 – Jackson County Baptist Church was constituted on Sunday night at Corinth
Baptist Church. Dr. Jack Lawson brought the evening message from Matthew 16: 13-18, with his text taken from verse 18 “Upon this rock , I will build ‘my church’.”
Five Marks God would call His church and the purpose of Jackson County Baptist Church:
1. A Church where the Savior is exalted and lifted up – to draw people to Jesus Christ.
2. A Church that expounds the scripture and preaches the Word of God.
3. A Church that emphasizes soul winning.
4. A Church that will educate the saints by teaching them what the Word of God says – get them ready to obey His Word and that is all they will need to be spiritually strong.
5. A Church that equips the servant to do the work of the ministry with the tools they need to do the job. We want to build a Church in Jackson County that God will call His Church.
After the church was constituted as Jackson County Baptist Church, Dr. Don Richards asked for a recommendation to nominate a Pastor. A motion was made by Mike Nabors and seconded by Tim Thomas to nominate Dr. Jack Lawson as the Pastor of Jackson County Baptist Church. Dr. Lawson was unanimously elected to be our Pastor.
