DeShields, Norcross too much for Lady Hawks in semis

The Mill Creek girls’ basketball team beat Norcross 67-53 in the second to last game of the regular season with the Lady Blue Devils’ star player out the game.

With Diamond DeShields back in the lineup Friday night in the semi-finals of the 7-AAAAA tournament at Meadowcreek, the Lady Hawks fell short of getting back-to-back wins over Norcross, falling 61-44.

Now, Mill Creek will play Saturday for the No. 3 seed out of the region for the state tournament. The Lady Hawks qualified for state Wednesday with a win over Collins Hill.

Mill Creek hung tough int he first half, jumping out to a 12-11 lead at the end of one, before getting outscored 16-10 in the second quarter to head into the half down five, 27-22. It was the down the stretch that Norcross pulled away, outscoring the Lady Hawks 24-13 in the final quarter.

Sophomore standout Jasmine Carter was held to just eight points in the loss and Kathleen Haxton was the sole Mill Creek player to score in double digits. She finished with 10 points on the night.

Rebounds and turnovers also came into play, as Mill Creek was out-rebounded 36-23 and turned the ball over 23 times. The Lady Blue Devils shot 45 percent from the field, while the Lady Hawks shot 33 percent.
