In last Thursday’s rehearsal, Chuck Miller, portraying Edwood P. Dowd, is animated as he issues an invitation to a lady selling subscriptions to visit the family home.
Get ready to join in filling the William Duncan Martin Performing Arts Center auditorium with laughter as the Jefferson Community Theatre takes to the stage this week.
“Harvey,” a comedy by Mary Chase, will be presented Jan. 19-22 in the Performing Arts Center at Jefferson High School.
Performances will be at 7:30 p.m. on Jan. 19-21 and at 2 p.m. on Jan. 22. Admission is $5 for everyone on opening night, then $10 for regular admission and $7 for seniors the remainder of the run. Tickets may be purchased from cast members or from Beth Laughinghouse at the Mainstreet Office or at the door on the night of the show.
Jenni Turley will portray Myrtle Mae Simmons with Susan Quinn as Veta Simmons. Veta Simmons and her daughter, Myrtle Mae, have come to live with her brother after the death of the matriarch of the family, well known for her entertaining. The ladies would like to do some entertaining of their own — especially with Myrtle Mae wishing to meet a man — but Veta’s mother didn’t mention that her brother, Elwood P. Dowd, played by Chuck Miller, made it nearly impossible to have guests. Elwood already has a pal, a 6-foot-tall white rabbit.
How can Veta cope with having Harvey in the house? You can’t help but laugh when Ethel Chauvenet, played by Sally Anne Short, comes face-to-face, so to speak, with Harvey.
Also joining the cast is Christine Dalton as Ruth Kelly, RN, David Trunk as Dune Wilson, Stacey Hubbard as Lyman Sanderson, MD, and Rick Bennet as William Chumley.
Patty Bennet will portray Betty Chumley, Stephen Quinn is Judge Omar Gaffney and Sidney Trunk will play EJ Lofgren / Miss Johnson.
Jefferson Community Theatre welcomes members of the community who want to be involved. You don’t have to take the stage — there is much to do behind the scenes, says Laughinghouse, who is busy talking up the community theatre.
“Maybe you like to create costumes or build things with your hands. Maybe you like to dig through the local thrift store or are you a baker of cookies? These tasks along with make up, sound and lights, designing an ad and keeping the website current are just a few of the areas that are up for grabs in this venture,” said Laughinghouse.
