JEFFERSON – The Humane Society of Jackson County (HSJC) has received an $891 grant from the Pedigree Foundation that is earmarked for the Raise the Woof shelter project. It will specifically be used to support the capital campaign to build Jackson County’s first animal shelter.

The grant was awarded through the Pedigree Foundation’s “Dogs Rule Program.” The mission of the Pedigree Foundation is to help dogs find loving homes.

The shelter project has been under way for almost one year and has had several accomplishments.

Ken Rhyne and Jacque Edmonds, internationally recognized architects, from Urban Design Group have volunteered their services and all the engineering services will be provided by Clark Patterson Lee Design Professionals at no cost. Claibourne Jordan was hired as the shelter campaign director and is leading the fundraising for the shelter project.

HSJC representatives are currently working with the Jackson County Board of Commissioners in hopes of securing a long-term lease on a parcel of county land.

Monetary donations are needed from individuals, as well as in-kind donations that will support the building efforts.

Established in 1998, the Humane Society of Jackson County was the vision of native Marjorie Butler, who worked with Bob and Sandy Wells to make her dream a reality. A low- and no-cost spay neuter program was started in 2006, and in February of 2007, the group got its Department of Agriculture License and began rescuing and placing homeless animals. In 2008, volunteers launched a courtesy placement program to assist with animals that needed re-homing that the group could not accommodate, since it currently operates through an all-foster home network. This year, the organization launched its capital campaign to raise funds for the shelter.

HSJC is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit and donations are tax deductible. Community meetings are held the second Tuesday of the second month of each quarter at locations around the county. Visit the web site at www.hsjc.com or call 706-367-1111.
