Online survey incorporated in superintendent search

Dr. Shannon Adams will conclude his time as superintendent at the close of this school year, and the search for his successor is already under way with the assistance of the Georgia School Board Association.

Adams has served as superintendent since 2006 when he was named to succeed the retiring Andy Byers, who lead the school system for more than a dozen years.

To provide the community with an opportunity to give insight into the desired qualifications and qualities of the next superintendent, Human Resources Director Kathy Elrod announced at Monday’s school board meeting that the link to an online survey with eight questions will be posted on the school system’s website, possibly by today.

A letter from Board of Education chairwoman Lynne Wheeler will be found on the school system’s website at along with the link. (See Wheeler’s letter below) The survey will be open until Jan. 27.

Providing input “will be very quick,” said Elrod, who encouraged members of the community, parents, staff and faculty to complete the survey. A question “What do you think is important” in the next superintendent would have a choice of answers to select.

Dr. Adams encouraged everyone to provide input which will be invaluable in the ongoing process.

Lynne Wheeler, who was re-elected as chairman with Tim Brooks named as vice-chairman, convened the school board back into regular session after a 25-minute executive session held for the purpose of evaluting the superintendent.

Wheeler announced Dr. Adams had received a satisfactory evaluation.

Wheeler said the board was appreciative all the 30-plus years Dr. Adams has devoted to education, many of those years in Jackson County.

“Dr. Adams, we thank you for all the leadership you have provided for our school system,” said Wheeler.

Wheeler’s letter to the community

Dear Stakeholders,

On behalf of the Jackson County Board of Education, I want to invite you to complete a survey on the qualities that you would like to see in our next superintendent. The Georgia School Board Association (GSBA) is assisting the Jackson County Board of Education by conducting the preliminary steps in choosing a new superintendent for our school system.

GSBA will receive the applications and present all of them to the Jackson County Board of Education sometime after the application deadline of March 2, 2012. Meanwhile, the Jackson County Board of Education wants to hear from you-parents, guardians, faculty, staff, and any other members of the community-on what characteristics you believe the new superintendent should possess.

Please take a few minutes of your time to complete this short survey. Note that one of the final questions allows for constructive written comment. A summary of the survey results will be given to the Jackson County Board of Education, and it will be very helpful as the applications are reviewed and qualified candidates are interviewed. Thank you for you input into this important decision.
