John Thomas Crenshaw, M.D.

John Thomas Crenshaw, M.D., 77, of Jefferson, died Thursday, Aug. 18, 2011.

Born Sept. 2, 1933 in Maysville, he was a son of the late Howard and Annie Morris Crenshaw. Dr. Crenshaw was a veteran of the U.S. Navy serving in the Korean War, a 1964 graduate of the Medical College of Georgia, a member of the Medical Association of Georgia, and was a physician in Jefferson for 38 years, starting his private practice in 1973. Dr. Crenshaw was a member of the Jefferson First United Methodist Church. He was also preceded in death by his brother, Bill Crenshaw.

Survivors include his wife, Frances Goodyear Crenshaw; daughters, Elizabeth Ann Crenshaw of Athens and Alisa Crenshaw Hardy of Manning, S.C.; sisters, Jean Crenshaw of Maysville and Mary Ann Cantrell of Arkansas; brother, Kenneth Crenshaw of Jefferson; and grandchildren, Joe Thomas Hardy and Lacey M. Hardy.

A private family memorial service will be held on a later date. No visitation is planned.

Maria Dita

Maria Dita, 88, of Winder, died Tuesday, Aug. 16, 2011.

Gladys Dickerson Gentry

Gladys M. Dickerson Gentry, 89, of Auburn, peacefully passed away at home Wednesday, Aug. 17, 2011, under hospice care.

She was preceded in death by parents, Edgar J. and Daisy (Strome) Moyer, first husband, Meredith W. Dickerson, second husband, Euell B. Gentry, and sister, Vivian (Harlan) Kelly.

Survivors include her son, Edgar W. (Barbara) Dickerson of Auburn, and was Mamaw to three grandchildren, Michael W. Dickerson of Valley, Ala., Penelope D. (Lee) Tench of Statham and Hollie F. (Roman) Carson of West Hollywood, Calif. She is also survived by brother, Edgar M. (Doris) Moyers of Fishers, Ind.

In her earlier years, she worked on Air Force bases, starting out as a clerk and working up to Base Commander’s secretary. Later she was a much loved substitute teacher at Winder-Barrow High School. Gladys made friends easily and loved everyone she met. Her generous spirit and happy chuckle will be missed by all. Funeral services were held Sunday, August 21, 2011, in the chapel of Carter Funeral Home with the Rev. Kenny Anderson officiating. Interment was in Rose Hill Cemetery.

Merritt Hill

Mr. Merritt Hill, 83, of Winder, died Tuesday, Aug. 16, 2011.

A native of Bishop, Georgia he was the son of the late George and Lollie Maxey Hill. He was preceded in death by his wife, Audrey Roberts Hill, and sister, Mary Frances Brown. He had resided in Barrow County for the past 60 years. Mr. Hill was a retired sewing machine mechanic with Georgia Sportswear.

Survivors include his son, Stanley Hill of Winder; daughter and son-in-law, Debbie and Dennis Lee, all of Winder; grandchildren, Brian Lee of Atlanta and Mandy Lee of Augusta; sister and brother-in-law, Ann and Neal Lord of Bishop; sisters-in-law and brother-in-law, Faye Roberts of Monroe, Virlyn and Louise Roberts of Apopka, Fla., and Shirley Wyatt of Hiram; and a host of nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held Friday, Aug. 19, 2011, in the chapel of Carter Funeral Home with the Rev. Doug Stroup officiating. Interment was in Barrow Memorial Gardens.

Claudine West Williams

Mrs. Claudine West Williams, 74, of Auburn, entered her heavenly home Aug. 20, 2011. A native of Gwinnett County, she was a daughter of the late Jesse and Ever Luther West. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Don Williams, on March 5, 2009. Mrs. Williams was a longtime employee of the Barrow County School System, where she worked in food service at Auburn Elementary School. She was a member of Midway United Methodist Church. She graciously touched everyone with her loving smile and dedication to the Lord, and will forever be remembered by friends and family.

Survivors include her son and daughter-in-law, Chuck and Lisa Williams of Auburn; daughter and son-in-law, Donna and Mark Patrick of Auburn; grandchildren, Cale William and Chad Williams, both of Auburn; and sisters and brothers-in-law, Bobbie and Winford Gower of Hog Mountain and Betty and Mark Hughes of Lawrenceville.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, Aug. 23, 2011, in the chapel of Carter Funeral Home with the Rev. David Moore officiating. Interment was in Barrow Memorial Gardens. Memorials may be made to Midway United Methodist Church Building Fund, 215 Kilcrease Road, Auburn, GA 30011.
